Melissa Dickey called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. The meeting was held at 5075 Benton Way instead of at Camp Rollandet.
Denver Police Department. Tech. Campbell, the Community Resource Officer for Dist. 1, reported that there was one crime against persons in our neighborhood in the last quarter and that no other crimes were reported in the neighborhood. She added that she hopes that’s a good sign. She urged us to make sure that our vehicles are secured. The commander’s advisory committee meeting was scheduled for the following Wednesday and said that John Walsh, the DA, will be attending. She brought some flyers with information about the 311 line for reporting issues. Melissa said the Association’s party in the Park will be on August 3 and that the Denver Fire Department will be there.
Councilwoman Sandoval. Alessandra Dominguez reported that Councilwoman Sandoval would have two sets of office hours that month. She provided information about a number of events, including yoga at the Elitch’s Carousel Dome, movies at Boettcher Commons, Tennyson First Friday, a music festival at Commons Park, the Tennyson Street Fair, and the Lowell and West 32th Avenue farmers’ market. She said that the City, in response to written requests, provides free yard signs advising people to slow down. She discussed openings on the Mayor’s Youth Commission. She reported that trash pickup on Labor Day would be delayed by one day. She said that the City Council approved rezoning of the Park Hill Golf Course.
Secretary’s Report. Amin Mudarres moved to approve the minutes of our April 8 meeting. That motion was duly seconded and was approved unanimously.
Treasurer’s report. Kendall Ebaugh reported that we have $4,571.76 in the Association’s bank account. We have received $1,000 from Councilwoman Sandoval’s office and other funds in membership donations. We discussed whether to approve spending funds for a climbing wall, the application for which would be submitted at least 60 days in advance. The fee for the permit is $212.50, for 4 hours’ use. A motion was made and was duly seconded that we spend $212.50 for a climbing wall on September 14, the tentative date for the neighborhood market. That motion was approved unanimously.
President’s report. Melissa announced that the neighborhood party would be held in the Park on August 3. She offered to coordinate that event. Amin needs people to complete the log stating what they will bring. We should have a flyer announcing the party.
We then discussed the newsletter. Katie feels that we should have a printed newsletter. Amin said he’s happy to take over the content for the newsletter, and Katie offered to help with the design. We talked about distributing them in plastic bags placed on residents’ mailboxes, with the goal to get them out the week before the quarterly membership meeting. We talked about getting residents to distribute the newsletter, especially on the south side of the Park. We could also post information on Facebook.
Katie discussed her experience working on parks, trails and climate issues for the Denver Vibrant Bond proposals. The projects included a number dealing with pedestrian issues. These are hard budget times. She said that while the city needs more housing, spaces for communities and for children are also important. The goal was to make our community a safer place for everyone. A brief on the bond issues was scheduled for the next day, the bond issues were to be voted on July 15 in a mayor/City Council meeting, and the issues will be on the ballot this November.
Katie also summarized the work on the DRCOG Sheridan advisory board. That board has two different events and has done a survey, but no one believes that the group has done serious community engagement. She shared what she and others have done to gather information and to engage the community. People shared about how scary it is to drive on and to cross Sheridan, and about the need for improved sidewalks. In response to a question about whether it would be possible to widen Sheridan, Katie said that it’s pretty clear that Sheridan is space restricted. She added that the group will be asking for money based on the overall survey. BRUNN has asked us to provide a copy of the report we provided to supplement DRCOG’s survey. At West 38th Avenue and Sheridan, and at West 52th and Sheridan, people are afraid to cross Sheridan Boulevard.
Loredana Ottobongo suggested dedicating the roundabout in Inspiration Point Park to the Campfire Girls.
The Association will vote on the proposed amendments to its bylaws in its October meeting.
We discussed whether anyone could help with the newsletter. Sheridan Glen residents could help with bagging and folding. Alessandra Dominguez advised us not to put newsletters in mailboxes.
